A Modern, Colourful Floral-Filled Wedding in Downtown Toronto

Meredith and Dave wanted their wedding to highlight the bright saturated colours of the summer. “We wanted the wedding to feel romantic and detailed but also modern and light,” Meredith shares. It was important for the couple to design a wedding that truly felt like a reflection of who they are and the things they love, which included good food, music, and tons of family and friends. “We loved the idea of creating a wedding where people were free to mingle and meet, and that didn’t feel overly structured but that still had a clear flow to the event and moved throughout the space over the course of the evening.”

This set the tone for a whimsical, non-traditional affair. For their venue they chose Ricarda’s, a gorgeous space in downtown Toronto with an atrium with seven-foot high ceiling and white pillars. The couple knew immediately that they wanted to work with Lauren Sellen of Coyote Flowers. “We played around with a few ideas before Lauren suggested creating a field of flowers for the ceremony space—we were immediately sold,” Meredith shares. “The field of flowers was truly a piece of artwork and she included the most subtle details, such as roses with their petals trailing off of them laying in the field, and varying floral shapes and heights.”

The bride’s gown was truly a memorable detail. When trying on Viktor & Rolf dresses at a trunk show at White Toronto, Meredith was torn between two dresses—one shorter, and one that went to the floor. “My mom showed dad pictures of me in the dresses and he immediately told her that the short dress was the dress for me—he was right!” Meredith shares. “At the wedding, I really felt like myself, but stepped up a few hundred notches.”

A live band was one of the biggest priorities for the couple to have at their wedding, so they opted for a 10-piece band play during the reception, and a jazz quartet during the ceremony. “Dave is a jazz music expert and requested that we have a Vibraphone player during the ceremony, which our music vendor, St. Royals, had never had a couple request before!” Meredith says.

Dave surprised Meredith and all their guests by hopping on stage to perform with the band. “Who doesn’t want to be serenaded with a love song in front of all your friends and family!?” Meredith recalls. “Everyone was so surprised and just lit up hearing him sing!”
